Are you preparing for the Dutch integration exams (Inburgeringsexamen) at the A2 level? If you want to secure your permanent residency or citizenship in the Netherlands, navigating these exams can feel overwhelming.
The exam is actually broken down into multiple separate components. The good news? You don’t need to figure it all out alone.
At letsdutchify.nl, we specialize in coaching expats to confidently pass the core language components. Here is our strategic roadmap to clearing the A2 exams on your very first try, including the exact materials you need.
Step 1: Master the Core Language Exams (Speaking & Listening)
The Speaking (Spreken) and Listening (Luisteren) components are where most expats feel the most anxious. Traditional textbooks fail here because they focus too much on grammar rules rather than actual conversation.
- The LetsDutchify Solution: In our A1 and A2 courses, we use our own custom-designed, speaking-focused study materials. We skip the boring fillers and teach you high-frequency vocabulary and exact sentence structures that the exam examiners want to hear. You don’t need to buy any external books for these language modules—we provide everything you need to speak fluently from day one!
Step 2: Ace the Reading & Writing Modules
Reading (Lezen) and Writing (Schrijven) require a strong grasp of Dutch word order (woordvolgorde). While our tailored course materials cover all the exam structures you need, many students like having a backup resource at home to double-check their grammar.
- Our Top Recommendation: If you want a lifelong reference guide to make sure your writing grammar is flawless, we highly recommend keeping the “red book,” Klare Taal!, on your desk. It covers grammar comprehensively from A1 to C2.

Step 3: Tackle the KNM Exam (Self-Study Secret)
The KNM exam (Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij) tests your knowledge of Dutch culture, history, healthcare, and daily life. While we don’t teach KNM classes directly at LetsDutchify, it is incredibly easy to pass this module via independent self-study if you have the right book.
To pass KNM seamlessly, you only need one specific manual that covers all the actual exam topics, complete with realistic practice questions:
- The Official Textbook: Welkom in Nederland (or the highly-rated Inburgeren in Nederland KNM method). This book walks you through exactly what to expect, from how the Dutch political system works to standard workplace etiquette.

Step 4: Complete Your MAP / ONA Portfolio
Don’t forget the administrative side! Depending on when you started your integration journey, you will need to complete the Arbeidsmarkt en Participatie (MAP) or Oriëntatie op de Nederlandse Arbeidsmarkt (ONA) trajectory to prove you are active in the Dutch workforce.
Step 5: Book Your Exams Early
The DUO testing centers fill up months in advance. Once you enroll in an A2 language module with us, log into your Mijn Inburgering portal and secure your test dates early so you have a concrete goal to work toward!
